Well Intentioned: Tessa Thompson on Staying Balanced and Wearing More Red Lipstick in 2022

2022 has only just begun, but Thompson is, in the words of Rickey Thompson (no relation), booked and busy. But having found a new appreciation for self-care during the pandemic, she’s making the time to look and feel her best. Here, Thompson takes Vogue through her beauty and wellness intentions for the year ahead, from unrushed skin prep to wearing more red lipstick.

1. Drink More Water

My strategy is having a water bottle that I really like carrying around. I have this bedazzled one that’s made by Collina Strada. I love carrying it and I get so many compliments on it! It also helps me use less plastic. It’s so silly, but it feels like a very fun accessory and I know I’ll never lose it because I love it so much. Another thing is having a really beautiful glass carafe with its own cup. I have that at my bedside and now it’s become a ritual of filling it up each night. I really do drink a lot more water because of it.

2. Perfect the Cat Eye—Once and For All

In this time where we’re still continuing to wear masks, I’ve become more conscious about eye makeup, and what works for my eye shape. It’s just committing to actually adding maybe 10 minutes to my beauty routine to just decide to do it. And I’ve already seen an improvement because I’ve been doing just like a little wing daily. I’m getting better at it! And I’ve realized a part of committing is that sometimes it’s imperfect. It’s like your eyebrows they’re sisters, not twins. I think the same is true to a certain extent with eyeliner.

3. Recommit to Bold Lips

Lips, in a way, are kind of like the mood ring of makeup. Depending on how you’re feeling, you can express that with a lip. I also find that if I’m tired, putting on a red lip is kind of a good hack because your eye is naturally drawn to that and it sort of peps you up a little bit. I’d love to just get better at it and experiment with more colors. Before the time of masks, if I was going to wear a lip, especially a red lip, it was a big to-do, I needed extra time to get it right. My goal for 2022 is to be able to excuse myself for like three minutes and miraculously come back with a perfect red pout. Like, to me, that would be absolutely glamorous.

4. Glow Up the Skin Prep

In general, I’ve been way more conscious of making sure my skin is really nourished and understanding what it needs. Moisture, moisture, moisture. Skin prep is kind of everything just in terms of how foundation sits on skin. I didn’t always use primer, and then I got into Armani’s Primer, which is really good and also gives you a bit of glow as well. Makeup application just looks so much better now that I think more about prep. I love the Armani Crema Nera moisturizer. It looks really good under makeup, but it also just feels really good after I take makeup off. With the Luminous Silk foundation, I don’t feel like I’m covering up too much. It looks like I’m wearing nothing, which is really nice. I feel authentically who I am, which makes me feel the most comfortable. This is so old school, but I’ve also gotten really into castor oil. I’ve been really inviting my eyebrows to grow and castor oil has been amazing and is always really easy to find.

5. Be More Intentional About Self-Care

It’s kind of cheesy or trite to say, but beauty comes from within, and really, truly, I feel the most luminous when I’m really feeling good and balanced in myself. The biggest beauty hacks really have to do with wellness, just like full stop. I spent the first three months of quarantine with deep conditioner in my hair, drinking a lot of water, and taking baths. My skin and my hair and my psyche were the healthiest they’ve been in a really long time because I was taking time to be intentional about all those things. I think when I have just a base of feeling really good in my skin that I feel really free to experiment.
