The Weeknd REPLACES Kanye West to headline Coachella after rapper PULLED OUT of festival last minute

The Weeknd will fill Kanye West‘s headliner spot at this year’s Coachella after the rapper decided to pull out of the festival just two weeks before kick off.

The 32-year-old singer has agreed to take over the Sunday headlining spot of the highly-popular Southern California music festival according to TMZ on Wednesday.

Their sources also say that EDM supergroup Swedish House Mafia – who were supposed to headline Friday night – will now be joining him on Sunday.

The Weeknd and the house music group – consisting of Axwell, Steve Angello and Sebastian Ingrosso – have a working relationship as they collaborated on hit track Moth To A Flame together.

Just a day before TMZ reported that singer has been in talks with festival organizers and, although discussions ‘stalled at one point,’ there’s a chance he will take the stage in ‘some capacity.’

Organizers were reportedly ‘testing the waters to see if The Weeknd would perform a few songs along with Swedish House Mafia,’ but they’re also interested in the hitmaker ‘as a stand-alone act.’

The Weeknd first hit the Coachella stage in 2012 and then three years later in 2015. He officially headlined the festival in 2018 with Beyonce and rapper Eminem.

His latest album Dawn FM was released this past January and debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart later that month once physical copies were made available.

The Canadian-born hitmaker also snagged a Grammy Award this past weekend for Best Melodic Rap Performance award for his collaboration with West on the song Hurricane, which was featured on the Stronger rapper’s Donda album.

No final determination has been made about The Weeknd, as other artists have also reportedly been approached for the last-minute gig.

According to the outlet, the Red Hot Chili Peppers – consisting of members Anthony Kiedis, Flea, John Frusciante and Chad Smith – are being considered.

Sources believe their inclusion ‘makes a lot of sense’ since there’s currently no major rock ‘n roll act on the festival’s lineup.

Rapper West, 44, was set to co-headline the annual festival with Billie Eilish and Harry Styles, both of whom are considered pop/alternative acts, as well as house music group Swedish House Mafia.

It was also reported that Coachella organizers were eager to recruit Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak’s Silk Sonic, who took home four awards at this year’s Grammys on Sunday.

Notably, the group took home the coveted Record of the Year gong for their infectious hit Leave the Door Open.

Unfortunately, TMZ’s sources claimed that Mars was the one to shut down Coachella talks because there is not enough time for them to put together a ‘proper show’ in time for the festival.

Although The Weeknd and the Red Hot Chili Peppers now sit at the top of the list of potential headliners, several other unnamed acts are also being considered.

Organizers are scrambling to salvage the long-awaited festival after West announced earlier this week that he’d no longer be performing, according to TMZ.

West is said to have made the decision himself to bow out from the two weekend event, that kicks off next Friday at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

Travis Scott was said to be appearing with Kanye – who has changed his name to Ye – and will also no longer perform, the outlet reported.

Scott had been tapped as the headline act for the festival 2020 before it was canceled due to COVID. He was then booked again for 2022 but organizers scrapped those plans after his Astroworld concert tragedy that left 10 people dead.

It remain unclear exactly why Ye has pulled out of the show so last minute. A source has claimed to Variety that West had not rehearsed or prepared for the appearance.

West’s last-minute drop out came months after he was banned from the Grammys for his ‘concerning online behavior’ and attacks against ex-wife Kim Kardashian and her boyfriend Pete Davidson.

He’d also published several offensive posts to Instagram about this year’s Grammys host Trevor Noah, which prompted the social media platform to suspend his account for 24-hours for violating their terms of service.

Despite the drama, West took home a Grammy Award during Sunday’s ceremony, but was not in attendance to accept the honor due to the ban.
