The Famous American Skier Who Changed Sides for One Last Shot at Gold

You’ve also done some acting, including a season of American Horror Story. Do you see your enthusiasm for skiing transferring over to acting, or is that something you’re taking day by day?
I’m just taking it day by day. I mean, I don’t think I’m a great actor, but I also don’t think I was a great skier when I was younger. I just loved skiing, and I worked really hard at it. I was the first person on the chair and the last person to leave, and I think that’s what allowed me to progress.

The thing I like about acting is that I potentially have the opportunity to do that again. And I think it’s something that you can continue to get better at forever, and there’s no expiration on it. But I also feel like I try and take it with a grain of salt, because it’s so competitive. There are so many people who are very talented at it, and more talented than I am. I would like to do that, but I don’t want to be naive about how difficult it will be.

How did you first start getting into it? Was it on a whim, or had you been harboring those thoughts for a while?
As a kid, I wanted to be an actor and I wanted to be a TV star, a movie star. I think my passion for it was sparked by my ex-boyfriend. My ex, Matt, is an actor. I saw firsthand with him how much he struggled with it, because he works really hard. And he’s really driven and he’s really passionate. And he’s also really, really talented. He’s a really good actor. And it’s not something that’s ever been easy for him.

But it was through being with him and watching him go through the process, and helping him run lines and putting him on tape, that I got really excited about it. And then I kind of expressed that to him. And he was really, really supportive and excited for me. So I was like, okay, cool. Well, then I’m going to try it.

Nice. Is that show you’re doing with Colton Underwood still happening?
Yeah. It’s not acting. It’s more of a docuseries. But I think it should be good. I don’t know. I got a lot of heat when it leaked that the show was happening. It’s a little bit of a touchy subject for me, because I feel like I got dragged for being a part of it when no one has even seen it. But hopefully, when people watch it, it might change some perceptions, because I don’t think it’s actually harmful.

What was the reaction?
It was kind of twofold. One, it was basically people being, “Why is Colton getting a platform, because he stalked his ex-girlfriend and, I don’t know, demonstrated abusive or sketchy behavior?” Which, obviously, is a very valid critique. But I don’t know. He doesn’t really get to address it too much, because they have NDAs and stuff. And I am not trying to belittle anything that she felt whatsoever at all. I think Colton’s behavior was wrong, but he’s actually a very sweet, gentle guy. And I don’t think that he ever intended to make her feel uncomfortable or hurt, but I don’t know. I feel like I shouldn’t even weigh in on that.
