Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk confirms two major characters will return for second season

Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk just officially confirmed the two major characters that will return for the highly-anticipated second season of his critically-acclaimed nine-episode hit Netflix series.

The 50-year-old filmmaker told Deadline on Saturday that Lee Jung-jae would be back ‘for sure’ as the flame-haired protagonist and sole survivor of 456 players, Seong Gi-hun.

The 49-year-old Korean sensation’s nuanced performance as the divorced chauffeur and gambling addict impressively earned him an Independent Spirit Award, Critics’ Choice Award, and SAG Award.

Hwang also revealed that G.I. Joe alum Lee Byung-hun, who played Squid Game overseer Hwang In-ho aka The Front Man, would also be returning for more dystopian drama violence.

HoYeon Jung – now known as Hoyeon – also took home the SAG Award for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for her acting debut as North Korean defector Kang Sae-byeok.

The 27-year-old Society Management/Elite model joked to Vogue in January that she’d love to return for season two in the same way deceased characters come back to life on the Korean soap opera Penthouse.

It’s not implausible considering Dong-hyuk teased to Deadline on March 19: ‘Let’s say maybe [Kang] has a twin sister, you’ll see.’

In the meantime, Hoyeon just signed on to portray journalist Catherine Ravenscroft’s (Cate Blanchett) ‘ambitious, hard-working’ staffer Kim in Alfonso Cuarón’s upcoming AppleTV+ series Disclaimer.

Netflix renewed Squid Game for a second season in January, which is expected to start streaming by the ‘end of 2024.’

The first season – which dropped September 17 – was ranked No. 1 in 94 countries and an eye-popping 142M member households binge-watched the hit show in its first four weeks.

But first, Hwang will shoot a big-screen adaptation of Killing Old People Club, Umberto Eco’s novel, that will ‘be more violent than Squid Game.’
