The heavily protracted divorce proceedings between Kanye West and Kim Kardashian has hit another speed bump. Los Angeles judge Steve Cochrane granted a request from West’s lawyer, Samantha Spector, to allow her to officially withdraw as the performer/designer/former presidential candidate’s divorce attorney, as per a report in Rolling Stone. She first indicated her wish to be relieved in May, citing “a breakdown in communication.”
TMZ noted that she was Kanye’s fifth divorce lawyer.
While West is now without legal representation in this matter, Judge Cochrane has nevertheless set a two-day trial date beginning December 14th. While West and Kardashian were declared legally single after a hearing in March, there are still specifics that need to be ironed out regarding their financial holdings as well as custody rights for their four children.
Kardashian’s lawyer, Laura Wasser, told the judge on Friday that her client has “been ready for quite a while” to get the proceedings underway. However, it would appear that West’s side is dragging their feet, as they have failed to file preliminary financial disclosures. Wasser noted that her client had already done so in November.
On Friday, Judge Cochrane told Wasser to officially “invite” West to respond to the case by September 30. (What that exactly means—like maybe appearing at Ye’s doorstep with a scroll bellowing “hear ye! hear ye!”—is unclear.) If West declines to respond, the trial will continue anyway, and, as Rolling Stone put it, “with Kardashian likely getting whatever orders she requests.”
The judge also said, however, that if West and Kardashian needed more time to call witnesses or present evidence, the case would be sent to a different courtroom.
The stress of divorce hit Kanye in a very public way in February, when he went on a since-deleted Instagram rampage, pitting allies and enemies against one another in send-up of Marvel’s Civil War. At the time it was Kanye, Drake, Travis Scott, Future, and then-girlfriend Julia Fox against Kardashian, Pete Davidson, Billie Eilish, Kid Cudi, and Taylor Swift. (Pete Davidson, Kardashian’s boyfriend of 10 months now, was Iron Man, if you’ve forgotten.)
Despite all this tsuris, Kardashian hinted in May that there may still be another spin at holy matrimony in her future. “Marriages come and go, take it from me,” she said on The Kardashians. “I believe in love. That’s why, hopefully, there will be just one more wedding for me. Fourth time’s the charm!”
For divorce attorneys, though, Kanye West likely hopes it’s the sixth time that’s the charm.
