How to Use a Skin Scrubber/Spatula

The short answer is yes, according to skin experts. Taylor Worden, celebrity esthetician and founder of Taylor Worden Skin, cites these tools as “a great alternative way to extract blackheads and remove a layer of dead skin.” Joshua Ross, the renowned esthetician behind SkinLab fame, elaborates: “They work by gently loosening the sebum from the pores and then manually extracting the excess sebum as the spatula passes along the skin.” You get an effective exfoliation that lifts away dirt, oil, debris, and dead skin cells from the surface—then, the spatula tip gently loosens up the pore-clogging impurities. “Better to use the spatula than trying to squeeze them out yourself,” Worden further advises: doing it yourself using more aggressive tools (or even just your fingers) can cause broken capillaries.
