Halsey blasts Capitol Records for demanding ‘a fake viral moment on TikTok’ before releasing song

Three-time Grammy nominee Halsey blasted Capitol Records on Sunday morning for demanding she create ‘a fake viral moment on TikTok’ before the label would allow them to release a new song.

‘Basically, I have a song that I love that I want to release ASAP, but my record label won’t let me,’ the 27-year-old pop star – whose pronouns are she/they – explained on TikTok.

‘I’ve been in this industry for eight years and I’ve sold over 165M records and my record company is saying I can’t release it unless they can fake a viral moment on TikTok.’

‘Everything is marketing’: Three-time Grammy nominee Halsey blasted Capitol Records on Sunday morning for demanding she create ‘a fake viral moment on TikTok’ before the label would allow them to release a new song

Halsey (born Ashley Frangipane) continued: ‘Everything is marketing and they are doing this to every artist these days. I just want to release music, man and I deserve better TBH. I’m tired.’

The New Jersey native then uploaded a second TikTok where the voice of a Capitol Records staffer could be heard brainstorming a marketing plan as she patiently listens on a phone call.

The male voice said: ‘…put that out. The song title because it would be Halsey’s So Good and they would get the art on TikTok. If you’re okay with those things but not announcing the day then I think we could put that up, honestly I think we put that up like sometime between Monday and Wednesday whenever they can get the artwork adjusted. [beat] What?’

Halsey could be heard replying: ‘I just hate this.’

‘You have to call the CEO of X, Y, Z and say, “Hey, hi. I’m just calling to let you know, I’m pregnant. I didn’t want you to find out on Instagram. I wanted to tell you myself, personally. It’s still business as usual over here though, don’t worry,”‘ the I Would Leave Me If I Could poet told Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe.
