American Idol: The Top 24 are revealed as the judges reveal the next round takes place in Hawaii

The Top 24 was revealed on Monday night’s episode of American Idol, with host Ryan Seacrest and judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan revealing a new surprise – and an Idol first.

After all of the decisions were made, the Top 24 singers were gathered, where Seacrest and the judges revealed that, ‘for the first time ever, we are taking our Top 24 to Disney’s Aulani Resort, in Ko Alina, Hawaii.

The singers were overjoyed but seemed not to fully realize where they were going, when Perry revealed the resort was, ‘in Hawaii’ as they cheered even more, while it was also revealed that the Top 24 will be joined by surprise mentors Bebe Rexha and Jimmie Allen, in next week’s two-night event from Hawaii on Sunday and Monday.

The end-of-episode tease only showed a few shots of Allen and Rexha from the Hawaiian resort, though Rexha was clearly impressed with the level of talent.

‘I’m blown away. Every single one of them is better than the other,’ Rexha admitted, while Bryan teases that one of the Top 24 delivers, ‘one of my favorite performances ever.’

Before heading to Hawaii, though, the Top 24 had to be set on Monday’s episode, which came just a day after the Showstoppers duet performances – where each of the singers were paired with another to pull off a strong duet.

Now on Monday’s episode, each singer must perform solo, as the judges make some difficult decisions about who is moving on and who is going home.

First up in the hot seat is Leah Marlene, a 20-year-old from Illinois, who admits her last performance wasn’t her best, but this would be life-changing to move on.

‘And if I were to make it into the Top 24, which I could barely even say without my brain exploding, that would be just a whole other level of life-changing-ness,’ she said.

When Katy Perry asked how she thinks she did for Showstoppers, Leah said, ‘I don’t think it was my best performance, but I feel like the goal of what I’m here to do making music is make music that I feel in my bones and that other people can feel.’

Katy added she was the ‘guitar queen’ for her performance but she hoped she would be the ‘vocal queen.’

Leah added her father – Derry Grehan – is in an 80s rock band called Honeymoon Suite, and she grew up around music.

‘My whole childhood, my life was just filled with guitars and amps. Always thought it was so cool that he was like a freakin’ rock star. And last night, my dad was there, and it was just, like, such a full-circle moment. It was so cool because I feel like I was channeling him,’ she said, as her performance of Larkin Poe’s Self-Made Man is shown.

Perry decided to mess with her a bit, because she likes seeing Leah, ‘freak out,’ before revealing she was moving on to the Top 24.

Next to receive the news is Austin standout Jay Copeland, who took a major risk to start his ‘Idol’ journey.

‘I had to drop out of grad school because I couldn’t do American Idol and do grad school. The auditions in Austin, Texas, really showed me that anything is possible. You don’t need them,’ he said.

Copeland sang Jar of Hearts by Christina Perri, and  after Jay’s performance, Katy didn’t remember him as being, ‘so Broadway,’ before delivering some uncomfortable news.

‘So, Jay, when we first met you, it was like signed, sealed, delivered. You sang that song, and we were. Yes. It was like, ‘Wow, we’ve got Season 5 sealed.’ In our opinion… You’re almost a perfect singer. But sometimes perfection doesn’t win over feeling,’ Perry said.

‘You look like a star. Just keep it a little bit dirtier, a little bit more soulful in the future. Okay. So, I’m sorry to say… your Idol journey… is ending… at some point in the future, but it’s not tonight because you’re in the Top 24.,’ she said, a reveal which was interrupted by a commercial break.

Perry said that they want to see, ‘something real wild’ from him and added that he has a ‘real shot’ of winning.

Nicolina Bozzo, an 18-year-old from Toronto, performed Adele’s Rolling In the Deep, a performance that was so strong they didn’t even string her along, with Perry telling her right away that she was in the Top 24.

The song seemed to impress the judges, with Katy standing and applauding for him, which Fritz said, ‘touched my heart.’

When talking to the judges, he admitted that Showstoppers was not his best performance, as Katy Perry told him the news.

‘We know that you want this. We know this is the world that you want to step into and find your true salvation. And we know that you will… All in good time. But we did not put you in the Top 24. You put yourself in the Top 24,’ Perry said.

Cameron sang It Ain’t Me Babe by Bob Dylan, but going into Cameron’s judgment, Katy Perry questioned whether he had the seriousness to put in the 10,000 hours needed to become a seasoned performer.

She played another mind trick, saying that Cameron didn’t ‘make the Top 25, but there isn’t a Top 25, there is a Top 24 and he made it.
